Theory Test

You can only book your theory test once you have obtained your provisional licence.

What does the Theory test entail?

The theory test is split into two parts both of which are taken on a computer in the order below:

Multiple-choice

This is a 50 question test based on the DSA's Highway code and 'Driving, the essential skills' guide.

You are given 57 minutes to correctly complete at least 43 out of 50 questions.

Questions covering 14 subjects are selected at random from a bank of almost 1000.

Most questions provide four possible answers and you must select the correct one. However some questions require more than one answer.

Learning and practise material can be bought from the official government shop

(You will be allowed up to 3 minuets rest between the two theory tests if you require it.)

Hazard Perception

This is an interactive video clip based test consisting of 14 videos recorded from the driver's point of view.

During each video there will be a hazardous situation that will arise in which the driver would have to take appropriate action such as braking. (One of the 14 videos will contain two such hazards.)

You are tested and scored on how quickly you can identify this developing hazard as a greater danger than any of the potential hazards in the video.

You will be receive a mark out of 5 for each video depending on when you identify the hazard. A score of 0 shows that you failed to identify the hazard in time.

The earlier you identify the hazard, the higher the score. However, if you click too early (before the developing hazard has appeared) you will also receive a score of 0.

Your average score over the 14 clips will determine whether you pass or fail.

You must attain a minimum score of 44 out of a possible 75 points to pass.

The hazard perception is designed to encouraging training in scanning the road, recognising at the first opportunity from the clues, that a potentially dangerous situation might arise and adopting a driving plan to reduce the risk.
